Thus, it\u2019s necessary for almost all instances to get one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-apply-for-an-ein-number\">How to apply for an EIN number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you\u2019re curious about how to apply for an EIN number \u2013 there is a process to it. So, you can\u2019t assume outright as you start your business that you have one. Here are the steps to take to apply for an EIN number:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-determine-if-you-need-one\">1 &#8211; Determine if you need one<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe it or not, not every business needs an EIN. But most do. Here are some of the instances where you may need an EIN:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you employ W-2 employees or withhold taxes on salaries paid out by your business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockadvisors.com\/resource-center\/small-business-owners\/business-entity-101\/\">changed the legal structure<\/a> of your business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you utilize independent contractors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you formed a business also registered with your state, like an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockadvisors.com\/resource-center\/small-business-owners\/llc-taxes\/\">LLC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockadvisors.com\/resource-center\/small-business-services\/incorporated-tax\/\">corporation<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blockadvisors.com\/resource-center\/small-business-tax-prep\/form-1065\/\">partnership<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you pay excise tax, tobacco tax, alcohol tax, or employment taxes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use a tax-deferred pension plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your business works with nonprofits, trusts, estates, or farm cooperatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you purchased an existing business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-apply-for-an-ein\">2 &#8211; Apply for an EIN<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways you can obtain an EIN: by mail, phone, fax, or online. The easiest way to apply for an EIN is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sa.www4.irs.gov\/modiein\/individual\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IRS\u2019 website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose the online EIN route, you will obtain an EIN instantaneously. The options are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Started a new business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hired employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Banking purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changed business types<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchased an active business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, you\u2019ll authenticate your identity by filling out your name and Social Security number or individual tax identification number. Then choose if you\u2019re the operator (or responsible party in a partnership or corporate officer who can legally bind the corporation) or are filing the application as a third party on someone\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll fill in your business\u2019 address. If you are a home business, fill in your home address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll fill out additional business information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-you-ll-receive-a-document-with-your-ein-from-the-irs\">4 &#8211; You\u2019ll receive a document with your EIN from the IRS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing each section on the IRS website, you\u2019ll get a document with your EIN. You can use it right away. You should save your IRS documentation of your EIN, as it will be used in many future instances, including filing your small business tax return. The ease of obtaining the PDF of the EIN from the IRS may cause some aspiring small business owners to deemphasize its significance. But, it\u2019s important to keep and store in a safe place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get the EIN number, you can\u2019t cancel it. But if you don\u2019t need the EIN, the IRS can close your business account. But it can be re-accessed at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-find-your-ein\">How to find your EIN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering how to find your EIN if you misplaced it, first check your bank records or a previously filed business return. If you still can\u2019t find it, you can call the IRS business and tax specialty line at 1-800-829-4933.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can try to find the computer-generated notice you got when initially creating the EIN.
